I wouldn't call it vanilla flavor, it tastes more like marzipan/almond. I've never tasted French vanilla that tastes like marzipan before. :) Have to give it away!

There is nothing wrong with the flavor itself, but the taste is more reminiscent of amaretto/almond than vanilla, hence 3 stars

When it smells and mostly tastes like bitter almond, it's probably what it is. There is no mention of the substance on the bottle, must have been a mistake in bottling. Vanilla is just a hint in the background, so I wouldn't bother using this as a replacement.
