Zense vs. Moccamaster
So, I was between ordering a Zense and a Moccamaster and I happened to pass by a local coffee shop and saw the Moccamaster. I was suprised how lightweight and thin the materials felt: the plastic, aluminim and glass.
(I've had a Moccamaster before and the coffee is excellent - no qualms, there.)
But since both have 5 year warrenty, I instead took a chance on the Wilfa Zense, And I'm very happy I did.
The cast aluminium is heavy duty and the materials all feel more premium than the Moccamaster. Quite honestly, the Zense feels like it should be a 150€ more than the Moccamaster, not less.
As far as the coffee, it makes Chernobyl hot coffee — quickly and quietly. As we are used to Kalita pour over, it was making very light brews, fast (we prefer medium). To compensate I now grind on a finer setting.
NOTE: There are TWO models almost identical to each other: one with the manuel "aperature" for slowing down, speeding up or stopping the flow from the basket (this model), and one automatic model which is like all other makers which stops the flow when you pull the carafe.
With this model you either have to wait for the coffee to drain before pulling the carafe otherwise it'll splash onto the hot plate. Or, you need to close the aperature completely and remember to reopen it when you make coffee next time. (If this makes sense.)
It seems like it would be an easy design hack to have both an automatic stop when removing the carafe AND the control of the aperature.
No matter, this a small complaint.
Overall: Highly Recomended.
