Hario POLARIS is an intelligent coffee scale that calculates the coffee-to-water ratio for perfect extraction and shows the extraction progress in real time.

Easily Measure The Right Amount Of Hot Water To Pour

The scale helps you calculate the ideal extraction ratio directly, so you can prepare your coffee recipe with precision. It accurately measures how much hot water to add, helping you avoid making your coffee too strong or too weak.

Easily Monitor Extraction Progress

The percentage display shows how much water to pour without needing to calculate each pour. For example, add 20% for 5 portions or 25% for 4, until you reach 100%. It adapts to different coffee amounts, simplifying recipe management.

The percentage display becomes your North Star, guiding you to delicious coffee.

Enhanced version of the V60 Drip Scale

If you've liked using Hario's classic scale (V60 Drip Scale), transitioning to this will feel cozy. The user interface is largely familiar, but many things have been improved. Compared to the basic Hario scale, the Polaris starts up much faster and the scale responds more quickly overall. The lighting is a nice addition and now the scale also works with weights under 2g, which is useful for weighing tea, for example. I don't have enough experience yet with battery life. The scale is much sturdier than the basic version and slightly more compact. You can turn off the sounds with a switch on the bottom. The touch buttons feel adequately responsive, although they still don't have a unique feel. Finally, wiping coffee grounds and chaff from near the buttons can be done without accidentally starting the scale.

The Polaris feature is useful for V60-style coffees. After weighing the coffee, you activate the function with the timer button, and it calculates how much water is needed based on the amount of coffee for the selected coffee-to-water ratio, keeping the recipe consistent. However, if you accidentally press the tare button after weighing the coffee instead of the timer, you can set the timer to manual mode by holding the timer button for a long press and make the coffee traditionally, like with the V60 Drip Scale, by checking the timer and scale. This "user error" is so far the only annoying thing, as there is no "oops" button if you accidentally zero the coffee amount weighed in the filter funnel and when the V60 Drip Scale's functions come from old habits. Time should fix this.

The percentage display in Polaris mode helps with the current trend of spreading out water pouring across multiple phases in many recipes, such as pouring water in five batches (20%-20%-20%-20%-20%). The timer starts in Polaris mode when the scale detects the start of water pouring, simplifying scale use since you don't need to start the timer manually with the kettle in one hand. You can also use the scale in the faithful manual mode of the V60 Drip Scale if desired, and start the timer manually there.

Overall, I think this is a significant improvement in usability and features compared to the V60 Drip Scale. It doesn't have the Bluetooth features, flow rate displays, and built-in rechargeable battery of more expensive scales, but on the other hand, the scale is likely to be long-lasting and not become technically obsolete quickly, as it doesn't include phone functions or other power-consuming features. Especially since the previous V60 Drip Scale was used daily for a few years, the Hario Polaris indeed feels like a good update.

Convenient, but could use more buttons

The scale is very sensitive and easy to use with the %-display so you don't have to count grams. A big plus is that it doesn't turn off before you finish brewing, unlike some other scales.
On the downside, the absence of a built-in battery is a major drawback. It also needed a few more buttons/displays. Currently, the same button/display has multiple functions and it's hard to know which mode the scale is in without reading the manual.

Easy start to coffee sophistication

A very handy coffee scale for the beginner. It conveniently works for measuring the amount of coffee and the required amount of water with different ratios for any need. Monitoring the amount of water in percentages makes it easier to prepare V60 regardless of how much coffee you make. The fact that the device operates on batteries is likely a plus in the long run instead of a short-lived battery. The only downside I would mention is the packaging, as there was no protective film on the scale's display.
